(Baonghean.vn) – In 2016, Nghe An province detected and treated nearly 3,000 tuberculosis patients. This information was released at the Launch Ceremony for the 2017 Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Action Month, held on the morning of March 24th.

Attending the Launch Ceremony in response to the 2017 Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Action Month and summarizing the 2016 tuberculosis prevention and control activities were representatives from the Department of Health, relevant departments and agencies, and health units in 21 districts, cities, and towns.

Over the years, with the support of the national tuberculosis control program and international organizations, Nghe An province has achieved significant results in tuberculosis prevention and control activities in the area, specifically: In 2016, the province detected, managed, and treated 2,973 tuberculosis patients of all forms; 90.7% of the total number of patients were cured; the rate of patients abandoning treatment was 0.5%; the mortality rate was 0.8%; and sputum tests were conducted for 33,886 cases.

Nghe An province's tuberculosis prevention and control efforts still face numerous challenges, including a lack of infrastructure at all levels; inconsistent coordination among healthcare units; lingering stigma associated with tuberculosis among a significant portion of the population; and difficulties in accessing healthcare services for people in remote areas.

Eliminating tuberculosis from the community remains a major challenge, especially in the context of increasingly reduced funding. At the ceremony, Nghe An province clearly stated that this year's World Tuberculosis Day theme focuses on "National Unity to Defeat Tuberculosis," aiming for the goal of "For the health of the community, let's strengthen tuberculosis prevention and control and eradicate tuberculosis by 2030"; calling on organizations, associations, and people to actively participate in tuberculosis control activities in the community.
