An international arrest warrant has been issued for former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo.

On February 9, a Peruvian judge issued an international arrest warrant for former President Alejandro Toledo, who ruled from 2001 to 2006, in connection with allegations of corruption in the scandal involving the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

Judge Richard Concepcion, who is presiding over the case, has approved the Peruvian Public Prosecutor's Office's earlier request to detain Toledo for 18 months for investigation into allegations of corruption, money laundering, and abuse of power related to the Odebrecht scandal.

Former Peruvian President Toledo is accused of receiving $20 million in bribes during his time in office to facilitate Odebrecht's winning of infrastructure construction contracts in the country.

Sources from the Peruvian Prosecutor's Office also revealed evidence suggesting that Toledo received $11 million in bribes via bank transfers from a close associate. Former President Toledo has completely denied all allegations of receiving bribes.

Odebrecht is at the heart of a massive scandal at Brazil's Petrobras oil company, which has rocked the South American nation's political scene since March 2014. More than 100 individuals have been convicted of corruption, money laundering, and forming a criminal gang, including dozens of leaders from the country's top construction and engineering companies.

Approximately 50 politicians, including many members of parliament and state governors, are under investigation. According to police, the ring used about $4 billion to bribe numerous politicians and officials.
