Two thieves sentenced to prison for their crimes resulted in the death of a deputy head of the criminal investigation team.
The People's Court of Dong Thap province has sentenced two thieves to prison for murder and resisting arrest, resulting in the death of a deputy head of the criminal police team.
On March 22, the Dong Thap Provincial People's Court tried defendant Ngo Hoang Tho (42 years old) for "Murder and Theft of Property"; and defendant Pham Hong Qui (34 years old) for "Theft of Property and Resisting Public Officials".
The incident resulted in the death of Captain Ho Tan Duong (then a Deputy Team Leader of the Criminal Investigation Team for Economic and Drug Crimes, Lap Vo District Police).
The indictment alleges that at approximately 10:20 AM on August 4, 2022, residents reported that two individuals, Tho and Qui, had stolen property from a truck along National Highway 2B, in Binh Thanh commune, Lap Vo district.
Upon receiving the report, a task force of four from the Lap Vo District Police, including Officer Ho Tan Duong and Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Thanh Danh, quickly organized a pursuit to apprehend the suspect.
The police ordered Tho and Qui to stop their vehicle for inspection, but the two suspects refused to comply, instead driving straight into the officers and destroying evidence.
During the pursuit, the task force repeatedly fired warning shots into the air and signaled the vehicle to stop, but Tho continued to drive the vehicle carrying Qui at high speed, swerving and fiercely resisting arrest, resulting in the death of officer Ho Tan Duong on the way to the hospital.
The court sentenced defendant Ngo Hoang Tho to 19 years in prison and ordered him to pay 180 million VND in compensation to the victim's family; defendant Pham Hong Qui received a sentence of 2 years and 6 months in prison.
