According to AFP, today (May 30), the two main female suspects in the murder of North Korean citizen Kim Chol at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in February, 25-year-old Indonesian Siti Aishah and 28-year-old Doan Thi Huong, are scheduled to appear in court.
Kim Chol is believed to be Kim Jong Nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The two suspects face the death penalty if convicted. However, both have denied all charges, claiming they were tricked into acting as if they were participating in a reality TV show rather than assassinating Kim Jong Nam.
Gooi Soon Seng, the lead lawyer representing Siti Aishah, argues that Malaysian police and prosecutors failed to provide the defense with CCTV footage of the assault on Kim, as well as the forensic autopsy report on Kim.
Gooi Soon Seng expressed his frustration: “Of course, this is causing a lot of trouble. I have sent requests and reminders many times, but there has been no response whatsoever. This is extremely unethical and shows a lack of goodwill.”
According to the Indonesian suspect's lawyer, the CCTV footage and forensic report are crucial documents in the defense preparation process. Mr. Gooi suspects prosecutors may make a surprise move.
He stated: "The rights to a fair trial stipulate that all relevant documents must be provided as early as possible in the period leading up to the trial, not at the last minute before the trial begins."
Meanwhile, Malaysian Deputy Prosecutor Muhammad Iskandar Ahmad urged the defense lawyers to be patient. He assured them, “Please be patient. We have a responsibility to provide all documents before the trial. That’s the procedure we follow in all other cases. This is just one such case, and we are simply following the proper procedure.”
Muhammad Iskandar Ahmad said that prosecutors are expected to request that the case be transferred to the Supreme Court for trial on May 30.
Meanwhile, police are still tracking down four North Korean suspects allegedly involved in the assassination of Kim Jong Nam. These individuals are believed to have returned to Pyongyang shortly after the incident.
