At the 15th Boston International Film Festival, Luong Dinh Dung's film received the "Indie Spirit Best Storyline Award".
Patrick Jerome - Executive Director of the Boston International Film Festival - shared: "This is our favorite work and one of the best films at this year's festival. I was impressed with Father Carrying Son through the scenes in the rain. Especially when seeing the scene of the flood submerging the house, the father putting rocks in the boat to keep it underwater... we really believed we were there and every scene was real. I felt like I was watching a real story, not fiction."

Luong Dinh Dung said that after the screenings, the audience stayed to ask more questions about the film, such as whether the character of the boy Ca would survive or what would happen to the father and son after they returned home.
"I had a meeting with a producer in the US. We discussed co-producing the film 5-7-8 that I am making next year," said the 7x director.
In addition, the website of the 17th Milano International Film Festival in Italy has just announced that Father and Son won the "Best Cinematography" award. The festival takes place from May 10 to June 10. The "Best Film" award of the event will be announced later this month.
Father Carrying Son was adapted by screenwriter Bui Kim Quy and director Luong Dinh Dung based on the short story of the same name, written in 1995, by Luong Dinh Dung. He conceived the project for 10 years. The film cost nearly 18 billion VND and was filmed in about 62 days.
At the 2016 Kite Awards ceremony held on the evening of April 9 in Ho Chi Minh City, Father and Son by Luong Dinh Dung received three nominations: “Outstanding Film”, “Outstanding Director” and “Outstanding Actor” (Ngo The Quan). However, the work failed all three categories and only received the “Outstanding Feature Film” award (equivalent to third prize). Unsatisfied with the result, Luong Dinh Dung returned the award to the organizing committee.
