Underground tunnels: The sun in the darknessThis is the latest work, conceived over a decade ago, by director Bui Thac Chuyen. It is also part of a series of activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the reunification of the country.
With "The Tunnels": The Sun in the Darkness, for the first time, the war and daily life of the guerrillas in the Cu Chi tunnels are recreated in a realistic and vivid way.
Set in 1967, the Vietnam War was intensifying. A 21-man guerrilla unit led by Bay Theo (played by Thai Hoa) at the Binh An Dong base became the number one target for the American military. The guerrilla unit was tasked with protecting a newly arrived strategic intelligence group hiding at the base at all costs. Radio communications with the intelligence group were detected and located by the American military, depriving the guerrilla unit of its only advantage: invisibility within the vast, complex, and mysterious tunnel system.
Furthermore, the film also tells a story interwoven with camaraderie, love, and the desire to live among soldiers, but above all, the spirit of sacrifice for the homeland. For example, the love story between female guerrilla Ba Huong (played by Ho Thu Anh) and Tu Dap (Quang Tuan) is realistically portrayed during wartime.
