Episode 5 of the series "Countdown Clock" brings a crucial turning point in the relationship between the two main characters. Thanh officially realizes that Linh Chi is not a stranger, but actually Bong – his childhood friend who suffered deeply because of his mischievous prank.
The truth about Linh Chi's past and her ears.
During a chance visit to Linh Chi's apartment, Thanh was shocked to see a childhood photo of her. Memories flooded back, making him realize that Chi was the same little girl, Bong, from years ago. Interestingly, Linh Chi had recognized Thanh before, but she chose to remain silent.
The pent-up remorse of many years overwhelmed Thanh, causing him to lose his composure. He admitted that his prank of setting off fireworks years ago had severely damaged her hearing. Thanh earnestly pleaded to take responsibility and make amends: "You don't need it, but I do. If there's anything you need help with, just say so. I still owe the little girl Bong from back then an apology."
A complicated family background and the stepmother's schemes.
Besides the story of her past, episode 5 also reveals more about Linh Chi's circumstances. Her father, Professor Minh Dong, a renowned expert in the field of biology, recently passed away after a heart attack. The relationship between Linh Chi and her stepmother, Mrs. Tuyet, is extremely strained. She decides to leave home to secretly find evidence to expose this woman's true nature.
Linh Chi possesses evidence that Mrs. Tuyet is having an affair with a young man, who is also cheating on her by pursuing another woman. Meanwhile, through his work at parties, Thanh begins to piece together the complex relationships surrounding Mrs. Tuyet. He notices the discrepancy between her gentle exterior and the "mafia" nature that Linh Chi's best friend once described her to be.
A promise to my deceased father.
The flashback scene shows that before Professor Minh Dong passed away, Linh Chi showed him a video proving Mrs. Tuyet's infidelity. Despite his pain, he instructed his daughter to promise to protect her younger sister and not let the adults' troubles affect her future. To this day, Linh Chi is still striving to fulfill this last promise.
Discovering Linh Chi's true identity, coupled with the pressure from his Grim Reaper mission (his mother only has 45 days left to live), makes Thanh determined to delve deeper into helping her. He needs to understand all the relationships surrounding Linh Chi in order to best support her in her fight for justice.
