Film about victims of Agent Orange makes it to the Oscar preliminary round of nominations.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected “Chau, Beyond the Lines” as one of the top 10 short documentary nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards.
"Chau, Beyond the Lines" is a short documentary about Le Minh Chau, a young man who is a victim of Agent Orange. Forty years after the Vietnam War, he is the only one in his family with birth defects as a result of the chemical weapon that the US military dropped.
From a young age, Chau was sent to Hoa Binh Children's Village, Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, to learn both a trade and literacy. His deformities in his hands and feet prevented him from living a normal life. However, he loved painting and always dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, bringing his designs to the world.

Those around Chau told him it was a dream that could never come true. For seven years, even with a wrist injury that left him only able to use his mouth and a pen to draw, Chau was determined to find the answer to the question: was it really a far-fetched dream, or could he achieve the impossible?
The 34-minute film "Chau, Beyond the Lines" was directed by 29-year-old Los Angeles filmmaker Courtney Marsh. The filmmaker met Chau when she was a student, was deeply moved by the character, and wanted to tell the story of a young man who refused to surrender to fate. According to the film's subject, Courtney Marsh began filming in 2007. The filming process lasted exactly seven years, and the work was only completed in 2014.
Members of the documentary branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have selected Chau, Beyond the Lines, along with nine other films from 74 eligible submissions this year, for the Best Short Documentary category. The final five nominees will be announced by AMPAS on January 14th.
Before its nomination for the 2016 Oscars, Chau, Beyond the Lines was honored by the jury at the 2015 Austin Film Festival and the 2015 American Film Festival. Recently, Netflix offered to release the film on television in North America.
The producers are currently holding numerous special screenings of "Chau, Beyond the Lines" in various locations across the United States, aiming to attract media attention for the Oscar race and to help the American public better understand the suffering caused by Agent Orange in Vietnam.
