Associate Professor Doan Van Dien - former Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry - has donated 2 billion VND to establish a scholarship fund for underprivileged students.

Sharing his thoughts on this decision, Associate Professor Doan Van Dien said that 20 years ago, he had been contemplating establishing a scholarship fund to help poor but studious students. He shared this idea with his wife, who enthusiastically supported him.

"I don't have the means to do everything, but at least a small scholarship fund can encourage these children to become good people and contribute to building the country," he said.

The 89-year-old associate professor said that initially, he planned to donate a sum of money annually to the Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry so that the university could provide scholarships to underprivileged students. However, after much consideration, he worried that his children might or might not continue this work when he reached a ripe old age. Therefore, he decided to dedicate 2 billion VND to establish a scholarship fund bearing his name.

Associate Professor Dien has entrusted this money entirely to the Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry. Each year, the university will award the funds to underprivileged students according to the criteria agreed upon by both parties when establishing the fund.

"Contributing to future generations of students is the greatest reward of my life," Associate Professor Dien expressed. He also hoped that the fund would allocate a portion to teachers, as they are the ones who contribute to teaching students.

Regarding the source of the money, Associate Professor Dien said it was the result of years of hard work and savings. After retiring from the public school, he worked as the principal of a private school, which provided him with additional funds.

"My pension is only 6 million dong, but I believe that knowing when you have enough is the key to living comfortably," the associate professor shared.
