On the morning of September 12, 1930, approximately 8,000 farmers from three districts: Phu Long, Thong Lang (Hung Nguyen), and Nam Kim (Nam Dan), under the leadership of the District Party Committee, marched in orderly ranks, armed with sticks, spears, and ropes, waving red flags with the hammer and sickle, to Yen Xuan train station to denounce the crimes of the French colonialists and the Southern feudal regime, and to call on the masses to follow the Communist Party. As the provincial delegation advanced towards Hung Nguyen district capital, upon reaching Thai Lao, the French colonial forces launched an air raid, killing 217 people and injuring 125. This brutal act of terror shocked public opinion both domestically and internationally.

Although the protest on September 12, 1930, was brutally suppressed, it demonstrated the immense power of the people's uprising and has gone down in history as an immortal epic. September 12th is celebrated annually as the anniversary of the Nghe Tinh Soviet Uprising.
