The West waged a “proxy war” against Russia through Ukraine and lost, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared.

Hungary, a member of the EU, has repeatedly criticized Western policies toward the conflict in Ukraine, particularly sanctions against Moscow and the transfer of weapons to Kyiv.

In an interview on the YouTube channel OT published on April 17, Prime Minister Orban stated that the entire "Western world" had supported Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, which he described as a "proxy war."

His assessment aligns with that of Moscow, which has long viewed the hostilities as a de facto conflict with the West.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, the West has lost, but "European leaders are still hesitant to admit" defeat. He argued that this outcome would have a major impact on the entire West, because "losing a war is a serious matter."

Orban went on to emphasize that European leaders are "offering Ukraine to continue the war in exchange for European Union (EU) membership." He argued that this would create problems because Ukraine would no longer be sovereign and would not be able to feed itself.

Regarding the United States, the Hungarian Prime Minister stated that Washington is in a better position thanks to President Donald Trump's approach, which has disrupted the Ukraine policies pursued by his predecessor, Joe Biden. According to Orban, President Trump "saved the United States from a serious failure."

Speaking on Hungary's Radio Kossuth last month, Prime Minister Orban described the EU's policies toward Ukraine as "without direction." He warned that Brussels, with its hardline stance, risked becoming irrelevant as Trump actively worked toward securing a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In early March, Orban asserted that the EU was giving Kyiv “empty promises” because they “no longer have a penny… [to] continue arming Ukraine, maintaining the Ukrainian army and financing the operation of the Ukrainian state.”

His comments came after Budapest refused to approve a joint EU statement calling for increased military aid to Kyiv.
