Originating from their daily lives and productive labor, the Thai people of western Nghe An have created their own musical instruments, contributing to the distinctive cultural characteristics of the Vietnamese ethnic communities. Among these, the pí khúi, a musical instrument used to call for a lover, is particularly noteworthy.

The Thai ethnic people have traditionally practiced slash-and-burn agriculture. Therefore, many of their musical instruments are basically made simply from readily available materials in the fields, such as bamboo and rattan, for entertainment or relaxation during leisure time. (Photo: Dinh Tuan)

According to elderly Thai people, in the old days, on moonlit nights, Thai boys and girls would often hold courtship singing sessions. After the gathering, the boys would bring their flutes to the house of the girl they secretly admired to express their feelings. If the girl liked the boy, upon hearing the sound of the flute, she would immediately open the back door for him to enter. On subsequent nights, the boy would only use the flute to play, calling out to his lover. (Photo: Dinh Tuan)

Artisan Luong Van Pan, residing in Xa Luong commune, Tuong Duong district, shared: “The 'pi khui' is a type of wind instrument made from bamboo tubes harvested from the fields. The bamboo used to make this instrument must be straight, beautiful, with evenly rounded stems, and neither too old nor too young… This ensures that the 'pi' will not be infested with termites later on, and the sound produced will be resonant… The 'pi khui' is about 60-80 cm long. This unique instrument has 5 holes, the distance between the holes is calculated according to the circumference of the circle at the end of the bamboo tube.” Photo: Dinh Tuan

"The finger holes shouldn't be drilled too big because drilling them too large will make the sound distorted," added artisan Luong Van Pan. Photo: Dinh Tuan

To ensure precise technique and the desired resonance, all stages of making the pí khúi (a type of bamboo flute) are done manually, without any machinery. Photo: Đình Tuân

Through our research, we learned that currently, the number of people who can play the pí khúi (a type of bamboo flute) is not large, and those who know how to make it are even rarer. Photo: Đình Tuân

For the Thai ethnic group, the pí khúi is a unique musical instrument, closely associated with their cultural life since ancient times. The sound of the pí khúi has long been considered a kind of "treasure" for finding a mate. The pí khúi can only be played solo or as an accompaniment to kháp (a type of Thai folk song), and cannot be used in ensembles. Besides being used to call for a mate, this instrument is also often used in housewarming ceremonies, celebrations of new rice cultivation, or the Lunar New Year. (Photo: Đình Tuân)
