PSV Eindhoven win the Dutch league title early in a record, Ajax drop out of the top 4.
PSV Eindhoven set a new record for the earliest Eredivisie title win in history, while Ajax continued to sink deeper into crisis after a 1-2 defeat against FC Twente.
The Dutch national championship (Eredivisie) has just witnessed a stark contrast in status: PSV Eindhoven clinched the title earlier than ever before in history, while giant Ajax Amsterdam dropped out of the top four for the first time. A 1-2 defeat against FC Twente at home pushed Ajax down to fifth place, 23 points behind leaders PSV.
PSV Eindhoven's unprecedented record
During the Easter holiday, coach Peter Bosz's team officially clinched the championship title five rounds early. This result was confirmed immediately after their closest rival, Feyenoord, was held to a goalless draw by Volendam. With 71 points and an insurmountable 17-point lead, PSV broke their own record for the earliest championship win in the league's history, a record they set in 1978.
PSV's dominance this season is heavily influenced by their professional style, boasting a record 14 consecutive away wins. Stars like their main striker Ismael Saibari (14 goals), assist king Joey Veerman, and experienced players such as Ivan Perisic and Dennis Man have operated a perfect winning machine, turning the rest of the league into unwilling spectators.
Ajax and the fall of an empire.
In stark contrast to the festive atmosphere in Eindhoven, the Johan Cruyff Arena is shrouded in gloom. Ajax's drop out of the top four is a direct consequence of their lackluster performances under interim coach Oscar Garcia. The most successful team in the Netherlands currently sits only fifth in the league table.

In the match against FC Twente, striker Wout Weghorst attempted to end his goal drought, which had lasted since October, with a goal in the 32nd minute. However, this goal was not enough to mask the carelessness of the entire white-shirted defense. Ajax repeatedly made mistakes and lacked confidence in ball challenges.

The image of Ajax struggling, unable even to get the ball into the opponent's half in injury time, perfectly encapsulates the team's decline. The defeat not only cost them their fourth-place position to Twente (48 compared to 50 points) but also made their goal of qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League seem distant. The 23-point gap behind PSV is not just a number, but proof of a complete decline in both direction and spirit for the Amsterdam giants.
