On December 27, Iraqi military spokesman Sabah al-Numani announced that the country's military forces had taken control of the government complex in central Ramadi - the last stronghold of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in this western Iraqi city.

Mr al-Numani said the control of the compound showed that IS had been defeated in Ramadi. “The compound is completely under our control and there is no longer any presence of IS fighters there,” Mr al-Numani said.

Regaining control of Ramadi, the city that fell to IS in May 2015, is one of the most important victories for Iraqi armed forces since IS took over a third of the country in 2014.
