Quang Ninh has an outbreak of African swine fever

A herd of 14 pigs owned by a local resident in Quang Ninh showed symptoms of fever, loss of appetite, and constipation.

On the morning of March 9, Quang Ninh province announced an outbreak of African swine fever at the home of Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, Duc Son village, Yen Duc commune, Dong Trieu town. This is the first outbreak discovered in this province.

On March 6, one of Ms. Lan’s 14 pigs showed signs of fever and stopped eating. By March 7, all of Ms. Lan’s pigs had symptoms of fever, stopped eating, and had constipation.

On March 8, upon receiving the information, the Quang Ninh Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine took four samples and sent them to the Department of Veterinary Medicine Region II (Hai Phong) for testing. By 11:30 p.m. the same day, the results showed that the four samples were positive for African swine fever.

This morning, Quang Ninh provincial authorities cordoned off the area, sprayed disinfectant, sprinkled lime powder around the barns and destroyed all the infected pigs.

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), African swine fever is a dangerous infectious disease caused by a virus that spreads rapidly among pigs, with a mortality rate of up to 100%. The disease is not contagious or causes disease in humans; it does not cause disease in other animals. From 2017 to February 2019, 20 countries reported the disease. A total of more than one million pigs had to be destroyed.

In Vietnam, the first outbreak of African swine fever was detected in Hung Yen province on February 1. By the end of March 7, the epidemic had spread to 10 provinces and cities including: Hung Yen, Thai Binh, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Hanoi, Hai Duong, Ha Nam, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh and Thai Nguyen.
