What did Quang Tèo do to accumulate such a huge fortune?
A spacious garden house, a convenient two-story shophouse, and a small house for... memories – how did Meritorious Artist Tiến Quang (Quang 'tèo') acquire such an impressive estate?
"Father Nguyen Dinh Thuc incites parishioners."
People find it hard to believe that a non-A-list comedian who mainly performed in the provinces for poor farmers could have such a substantial estate as he does now.
- It's terrible. I've been subjected to so much scrutiny since the news broke that I was involved in ivory trafficking. Then there were headlines using words like 'shocking, surprising...' because of my wealth. It was as if I were involved in some kind of illegal business to get the money. To me, there's nothing shocking or surprising about it; it's all the result of my hard work. Honestly, I work like a dog. Many actors say they aren't as famous as I am to have as many shows, but if they were in my position, they couldn't do what I do either.
Nobody knows how incredibly hard I work and how frugal I am. If I spent all day eating, drinking, and partying, even a mountain of money would be gone; how could I possibly get ahead? Nobody knows how many drinking parties I've had to turn down just to go to work. What's there to be surprised about? The press should be surprised by my hard work, not mine.

| Artist Quang Tèo owns a shophouse apartment in Mỹ Đình worth nearly 7 billion VND. |
My life is a mix of being an artist and a "workhorse." Back when I was still at the Army Theater, if there was a show in Son La that invited me to perform, I'd drive there and back, driving through the night, and then be home on time the next morning. Who else could do that, driving themselves? I never hire a driver. I'm afraid of sitting behind the wheel of someone else's car.
On the 8th day of the Lunar New Year, Vuong 'Rau' accepted a show at the Phu Xuyen To He Village. I didn't know about it beforehand, but Vuong said he'd already accepted, so I didn't want them to put my name on the banner and then back out. I accepted. However, on the same day, I had a charity performance at a temple in Thuy Nguyen (Hai Phong). After performing in Phu Xuyen, I immediately got in the car and went straight to Thuy Nguyen, performing on stage without any time to rest or eat. After the performance, the audience rushed onto the stage to take pictures; I thought I'd get a drink of water, but I didn't get one.
It's true that artists are often poor, but I can confidently say that I've worked incredibly hard to achieve what I have today. I was so happy that when I bought my new house in My Dinh, I invited my fellow artists to my garden to slaughter a pig and celebrate. It's the result of my hard work, and I hope my fellow artists will be happy for me and that young artists will look up to this and strive for success. Nothing comes naturally.
Dam Vinh Hung also started out as a street barber. Le Quyen is famous now, but there was a time when she sang backup for me. She only earned 150,000 VND per performance, but she still cycled there, performing in the provinces and traveling with me. This shows that Dam Vinh Hung and Le Quyen didn't become wealthy and successful by chance. The important thing is knowing how to work hard.
Working like a "buffalo plowing the field" is the secret to my "huge fortune" that everyone talks about. If you don't believe me, just do as I do; you might even have a much better fortune. I'm nothing compared to society anyway (laughs).

| Quang 'Teo' and Giang 'Coi' are a well-matched acting duo and are loved by many viewers. |
Many actors, while still employed by the theater, are very reluctant to take on outside gigs. Aren't you afraid of being criticized for doing so constantly?
- Oh, it's true, back when I was working, I almost got disciplined for "taking advantage" of the situation. I often took advantage of my free time outside of the theater to perform outside. I explained that besides increasing my income and establishing my personal brand, performing outside also brought prestige to the theater, and I wasn't tarnishing its image. My name sells tickets; people were treated differently when I was in the troupe performing.
For example, Quang 'Teo' is an actor at the Army Drama Theatre, Xuan Bac is an actor at the Vietnam National Drama Theatre, Tu Long is at the Army Cheo Theatre, and Cong Ly is at the Hanoi Drama Theatre... It's so convenient, what's there to object to? Besides, if we were to keep performing only on stage and not perform outside, we wouldn't be able to reach a wider audience. As long as we ensure our work at the theatre is taken care of, that's fine.
With such a successful career, what do you fear most now?
- Even after retirement, my biggest fear is unemployment. I'm used to performing, and even though I have enough now, I still want to perform. I'll go wherever I'm invited; I don't turn down any small event. There are events where the fee is only 2 million VND, and after spending a few hundred thousand VND on gas, I still go. Because I love my profession.
