How long is the B1 driver's license valid for?

According to Article 59 and Article 60 of the Road Traffic Law 2008, people aged 18 and over can register to study and take the B1 driving license exam. Upon passing the exam, students will be granted a B1 driving license to be able to drive cars on the road.

Article 17, Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT stipulates the validity period of Class B1 Driver's License as follows:

"A Class B1 driving license is valid until the driver is 55 years old for women and 60 years old for men; in case the driver is over 45 years old for women and over 50 years old for men, the driving license issued is valid for 10 years from the date of issue".

According to this regulation, the validity period of B1 driver's license is determined based on the driver's age when the license is issued:

- Drivers aged 45 or under (female) or under 50 years old (male): Class B1 driver's license is valid until the driver is 55 years old (female) or 60 years old (male).

- Drivers over 45 years old (female) or over 50 years old (male): Class B1 driver's license is valid for 10 years from the date of issue.

B1 driver's license expired, do I have to retake the test?

According to Article 36, Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, when the Driver's License expires, the driver can apply for a new Driver's License. Depending on the expiration time, the driver may or may not have to retake the B1 driver's license test. Specifically:

- B1 driver's license expired less than 03 months: Drivers will be re-issued a driver's license without having to take a test.

- B1 driver's license expired from 03 months to less than 01 year: Drivers will be re-issued a B1 driver's license after passing the theory test again.

- B1 driving license expired for 01 year or more: Drivers will be re-issued a B1 driving license after passing the theory and practice test again.
