Quynh Luu achieves great success with its summer-autumn onion crop.
(Baonghean.vn) - At this time, people in the coastal areas of Quynh Luu district are actively harvesting spring onions in the fields, rejoicing at a bountiful harvest and good prices.
Quynh Luong is the largest vegetable-growing area in the district, covering over 130 hectares. Starting in August, farmers focus on planting spring onions to replace some areas of other vegetable crops. Thanks to favorable weather and little rain, the spring onions grow well and yield high productivity.

Ms. Ho Thi Huong's family (Hamlet 3, Quynh Luong) has 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of land for growing vegetables, including 2 sao of spring onions that are currently being harvested. Ms. Huong said: "The weather is cool and there are no floods, so the spring onions are growing quickly. On average, my family harvests nearly 2 tons of spring onions per sao, almost double the amount from the previous season. This season, the price of spring onions is also high at 9,000-10,000 VND/kg, so farmers are earning a profit of 15 million VND per sao, the highest since the beginning of the year."

Similarly, this year's onion crop has been a great success for farmers in Quynh Bang commune. Ms. Ho Thi Hoa's family planted 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of onions, and if harvested, they expect to yield nearly 10 tons, earning 90-100 million VND per crop. "In previous seasons, onion prices were only 3,000-5,000 VND/kg, and if the onions were good, we could earn a profit of 4-6 million VND per crop. However, this season the price is double, so all the onion growers are earning a good income," Ms. Hoa said.
From August to October, people in the coastal areas of Quynh Luu district mainly cultivate spring onions. Spring onions take 35-45 days to grow from planting to harvesting.

This year, the high price of spring onions is due to large-scale purchasing by dried onion processing facilities in some northern provinces such as Ninh Binh, and early purchases by provinces like Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hue, and Da Nang, pushing prices higher than in previous years.
Currently, farmers in Quynh Luu district are selling hundreds of tons of spring onions to the market every day. Of that amount, Quynh Luong commune alone sells approximately 50-60 tons of spring onions per day.

In the 2016 summer-autumn season, the communes of Quynh Luong, Quynh Minh, and Quynh Bang cultivated spring onions, totaling nearly 300 hectares. The yield of spring onions in the summer-autumn season reached over 35 tons/ha.
Currently, farmers in the coastal areas are continuing to harvest spring onions and simultaneously planting seeds for the next crop. They cultivate spring onions 3-4 times a year.
