A key figure in a fuel smuggling case that caused tens of billions of dong in losses has surrendered after months of evading arrest abroad.

On the afternoon of December 17th, Division 4 of the Criminal Fugitive Apprehension Department announced that they had apprehended a wanted suspect and handed him over, along with the initial case file, to the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Ministry of Public Security.

Previously, the General Department of Police leadership assigned the Juvenile Crime Police Department the task of investigating and apprehending Nguyen Van Thanh, 44 years old, residing in Bach Dang Ward, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, a particularly dangerous wanted fugitive.

Wanted suspect Nguyen Van Thanh (the person sitting furthest left in the photo) has turned himself in to the police.

Thanh was wanted by the Police Investigation Agency of the Ministry of Public Security for smuggling, and he went into hiding immediately after the ship carrying smuggled gasoline was caught red-handed, causing tens of billions of dong in losses to the State.

Through persuasion and encouragement, on December 16th, Thanh's family brought him to the headquarters of the Department of Juvenile Crime Prevention and Control to surrender.

At the police station, Thành initially confessed that after the incident, he fled to China and worked on a fishing boat inland, earning about 3,000 RMB per month and only coming ashore about once every 20 days.

Since he went into hiding and hadn't returned home, when his mother called to tell him that officers from the Criminal Investigation Department had come to persuade the family to bring him and his brother to surrender, Thanh returned from China to Vietnam and was taken by his family to the police station to turn himself in.
