Real Madrid made their most frugal signings in 13 years.

The summer of 2016 was the transfer window in which Real Madrid spent the least amount of money since 2003, when David Beckham joined the Bernabeu.

This summer, Real Madrid only spent around $33 million. The entire amount was spent on the re-signing of Alvaro Morata from Juventus.

Real Madrid's surprisingly frugal spending in the transfer market is taking observers by surprise. One has to go back to 2003 to see a Real Madrid team that tightened its purse strings like this: buying David Beckham for $28 million.

Over the past 13 years, Real Madrid has consistently spent lavishly in the transfer market. The peak was in the summer of 2009, when the team spent 290 million euros to buy Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema, and Alonso.

In the summer of 2013, Real Madrid continued to shock the football world by breaking their own record with the signing of Bale. A year later, James Rodriguez also joined the team for an exorbitant price.
