Redmagic Astra: A near-perfect OLED Android tablet for gamers

The Redmagic Astra stands out with its stunning 165Hz OLED display and powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite performance. However, its limited software update policy is a major drawback.

In a rapidly resurgent Android tablet market, the Redmagic Astra emerges as an attractive option, especially for those seeking a compact yet powerful device. With its excellent OLED display and gaming-oriented hardware, it can be considered a near-perfect version of a compact Android tablet, although one notable drawback remains.

Design and Display: A Combination of Sophistication and Performance

Essentially, the Redmagic Astra is a gaming tablet, but its design is quite sophisticated. It boasts a unibody metal frame, giving it a solid and premium feel. In the "Eclipse" color variant, when the screen is off, the device looks very similar to an iPad Mini. The only highlight on the back is a "transparent" window displaying the Redmagic logo, some simulated internal components, the camera module, and a cooling fan with customizable RGB lighting.

The design of the Redmagic Astra is quite refined for a gaming device.

At just 6.9mm thick, the Redmagic Astra feels more compact than its competitors. A major plus is the integrated fingerprint sensor, which enhances security and convenience compared to relying solely on facial recognition. However, the metal surface of the device is very prone to fingerprints.

The Astra's most impressive feature is its display. The 9.06-inch OLED panel boasts a resolution of 2400x1504, delivering sharp images. OLED technology provides deep blacks and superior contrast compared to LCD screens on many other tablets. Furthermore, this screen doesn't compromise on specifications, still supporting a 165Hz refresh rate and a maximum brightness of up to 1600 nits, ensuring an excellent experience from watching movies to playing games.

Powerful performance for the ultimate gaming experience.

Inside the Redmagic Astra is the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, coupled with generous RAM and storage options: 12GB/256GB, 16GB/512GB, and 24GB/1TB. This power ensures smooth gameplay for all titles. Demanding games like Fortnite can maintain a stable 90fps even with high graphics settings.

To maintain performance, the machine is equipped with an integrated cooling fan. This system helps keep the machine cool during extended gaming sessions. Airflow is directed through speakers on the side, a clever design that effectively dissipates heat. Users can customize fan speed and performance modes through the dedicated Game Lobby interface.

Software and battery life: Is the experience truly fulfilling?

The Redmagic Astra comes pre-installed with Android 15, featuring a fairly clean interface with minimal bloatware. The daily user experience is very similar to stock Android, with only minor customizations to the home screen and settings.

However, activating the "Game Lobby" mode via a physical switch completely changes the interface. This is a dedicated space for gamers, providing quick access to optimization tools. While useful, this interface is considered quite colorful and wasteful of space.

Game Lobby offers many optimization tools but has a rather cluttered interface design.

In terms of battery life, the 8,200 mAh battery provides fairly good usage time. However, the device tends to drain the battery a little faster than expected in non-gaming tasks. For example, after 10 hours of continuous movie watching on an airplane, the battery was only at about 30%.

Policy update: Redmagic Astra's Achilles' heel

The biggest drawback, and potentially the deciding factor for many users, is the software update policy. Redmagic only commits to one major Android OS update and periodic security patches for three years. In the current climate, this is an unacceptable policy, especially for a device that starts at $549.

The fact that a tablet will soon become software obsolete for much of its lifespan is a major drawback, reducing the long-term value of the product even if the hardware is excellent.

Accessories and pricing

Another drawback is the lack of included and readily available accessories. Unlike some competitors, the Redmagic Astra doesn't include a protective case or screen protector in the box. Official accessories are also quite rare and expensive. The camera currently starts at $549 on the manufacturer's official website.

Overall, the Redmagic Astra is a nearly perfect compact Android tablet in terms of hardware, screen, and performance. However, its poor software update policy has become a fatal flaw, preventing it from being a perfect choice for everyone.
