Earlier, Ms. Huong had said she would punish students by making them drink water squeezed from a blackboard cleaning cloth, with the class monitor supervising. Phuong Anh was the first student to be punished in this way.

Having only been assigned to be the homeroom teacher for a second-grade class for two weeks, a teacher at Lien Minh Cong Nong Primary School (Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City) has faced public backlash for making 11 students hold blackboard cleaning cloths in their mouths.

According to this teacher, the class has 40 students. Every time she turns to write on the blackboard, the students below start talking loudly. When reprimands didn't work, she threatened to wipe the mouth of any student who talked during class with the blackboard eraser. But the situation continued to repeat itself.

Afraid of having our heads submerged, nine of us submerged our heads in the bucket of water so we could go to class.”

After the incident, the children didn't dare tell their parents because the teacher threatened to punish them more severely if they did.

2003: Students forced to lick chairs for graffiti in Ha Tinh.

Seeing that the teacher's chair and the two front desks of the classroom were defaced with drawings, Ms. Tran Thi Phuong Lan (English teacher, class 7I, Hoa Lien Secondary School, Nghi Xuan, Ha Tinh) made 47 students lick the chairs clean.

Then, Ms. Lan made the children vote secretly to write down the name of the "culprit." The poll yielded no results, as all the ballots were blank. Ms. Lan became furious, tore up the ballots, threw them in the trash, and proceeded with the second round of punishment as before.

That evening, many parents of students met with the homeroom teacher to report the incident, at which point the school became aware of it. Ms. Lan was disciplined with a demotion, being transferred from a teacher position to an administrative clerk role.
