The VN-Index quickly reversed course after an early gain as selling pressure increased, while capital flows remained cautious in leading stock groups.

Opening the trading session on the morning of August 19th, the VN-Index started in positive territory but quickly reversed course and declined as selling pressure increased and red dominated the trading board. The index's decline was somewhat mitigated by some large-cap stocks such as VHM and VIC, which maintained slight gains or remained at their reference prices.

Meanwhile, cash flow remained cautious in leading stock groups such as banking, securities, and real estate. Market liquidity showed no significant signs of improvement, but VSC unexpectedly emerged as a bright spot in trading volume, leading on the HOSE despite only a slight increase in share price.

In the banking sector, TCB (-0.15%), HDB (-0.56%), VPB (-0.6%), CTG (-1.27%), STB (-0.8%), SHB (-0.86%), BID (-0.83%), and VCB (-0.88%) saw declines. In the real estate sector, VIC (-0.25%), VHM (-0.43%), NVL (-0.76%), VPI (-0.16%), KDH (-1.13%), DIG (-1.42%), and CEO (-1.68%) experienced declines.

Financial services group: VIX (-1.52%), VCI (-1.89%), VND (-1.56%), SSI (-1.28%), SHS (-0.68%), HCM (-0.8%), and MBS (-0.58%). Food and beverage group: MSN (-1.35%), VNM (-0.32%), BAF (-0.31%), SAB (-0.76%), VHC (-0.94%), MCH (-0.66%), and HPA (-3.01%).

At the close of trading, the VN-Index fell 7.89 points to 1,724.13 points (-0.46%) compared to the previous session. Similarly, the HNX-Index decreased by 280.39 points (-0.68%), equivalent to 1.93 points, and the UPCoM-Index decreased by 127.32 points (-0.11%), equivalent to 0.14 points.

Market liquidity reached VND 5,078.27 billion, with 187 million shares traded. Across the sector, 80 stocks increased, 212 decreased, and 50 fell to the reference price.

According to experts at AIS Securities Company, the VN-Index recorded a slight recovery session, but market liquidity remains quite low.

The main support came from the energy and industrial sectors. Conversely, downward pressure was present in the real estate, securities, and banking sectors.

Low liquidity raises concerns that downward pressure may continue in the final weeks of August. The nearest support level is the short-term psychological threshold of 1,700 points.

Investors still prioritize portfolio risk management, so they are proactively reducing their holdings in sectors experiencing price declines and avoiding premature bottom-fishing.

According to experts at Tien Phong Securities Company, investors need to maintain a cautious view regarding the future movements of the VN-Index, as the trend structure leans towards a decline in the medium term, and liquidity in general remains low compared to the previous period, making the market lack momentum.

However, opportunities still exist during corrections, especially at previously established medium- and long-term support levels such as 1,650-1,600 points.
