Samsung has just announced its plan to discontinue the Samsung Messages app in July. This is a strategic move to unify the messaging experience across the Android ecosystem, replacing it with Google Messages, which already has many modern features integrated.

Why Samsung prioritizes Google Messages

Since 2021, Samsung has begun shifting towards pre-installing Google Messages on its Galaxy devices. Removing its own app allows the company to focus on synchronization and fully leverage the technological advantages of Google. Samsung now provides detailed instructions for users running Android 12 and Android 13 to facilitate a smooth data transfer.

Google Messages offers many advantages over traditional applications, especially the RCS (Rich Communication Services) standard. This technology allows users to receive typing status notifications, create more stable group chats, and send high-quality images and videos without compression like regular SMS.

AI integration and device compatibility.

A notable feature of Google Messages is its integration with Gemini artificial intelligence, supporting automatic spam filtering and multi-device compatibility. Currently, the app is the default on newer products like the Galaxy S26. For older devices running Android 11 or earlier, although not directly affected, users are still advised to switch to Android 11 or earlier to receive security updates.

After being completely disabled, Samsung Messages will be limited to sending messages only to emergency services. An important note for Galaxy Watch users running Tizen: these models will no longer support full access to conversation history due to compatibility limitations with Google Messages, while models from Galaxy Watch 4 onwards (running WearOS) will still function normally.
