Information from Wear OS source code reveals that Samsung is developing the Galaxy Watch9 series with three distinct codenames, including the return of the Classic version and a new generation Ultra model.
Samsung is expected to refresh its smart wearable lineup this year with the introduction of three high-end watch models. According to the latest leaks, the South Korean electronics giant may break its tradition of staggered releases to bring back the Classic version sooner than expected, catering to users who prefer traditional watch designs.
Strategic codenames for the Galaxy Watch9 series have been revealed.
Analysis of the Wear OS update's source code has revealed three key codenames believed to belong to Samsung's next-generation smartwatch. Specifically, these codenames include: Fresh 9, Wise 9, and Project V2.
Based on previous naming conventions, analysts believe Fresh 9 is the standard version of the Galaxy Watch9. Meanwhile, Wise 9 is thought to be the Galaxy Watch9 Classic variant, and Project V2 is the codename for the top-of-the-line Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
The return of the physical roulette wheel and the Raise to Talk feature.
The appearance of the codename Wise 9 is quite surprising because, according to the usual cycle, Samsung typically releases the Classic version every other year. If this information is accurate, the Galaxy Watch9 Classic will mark the return of the signature physical rotating bezel – a feature that has differentiated it from competitors in terms of user experience and aesthetics.
Besides hardware changes, Google's source code also reveals the appearance of the "RttSettingsManager3pWearOs" setting. This suggests that the "Raise to Talk" feature, which is exclusive to the Pixel Watch, will soon be extended to the Galaxy Watch9 and other Wear OS devices.
Expected launch in Q3 2025
The Galaxy Watch9 series is predicted to launch around the same time as the next-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip8 and Galaxy Z Fold8. If Samsung follows its annual schedule, the next Unpacked event could take place in July, where the entire new wearable ecosystem will be officially announced.
