Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold foldable smartphone has officially failed JerryRigEverything's bending test due to its overly thin design and excessive use of plastic.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, the ambitious triple-folding smartphone from the South Korean tech giant, recently underwent a rigorous durability test. However, the results were not very promising, as the device failed the famous bend test conducted by disassembly expert JerryRigEverything.

The collapse of the ultra-thin triple-fold structure.

In the latest test video, JerryRigEverything pointed out that the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold has too many physical weaknesses. This is Samsung's first foldable phone that completely failed the bending test. The main reason identified is the phone's extremely thin design combined with the excessive use of plastic in the frame and screen structure.

While optimizing for slimness makes the tri-fold design more compact when pocketed, it inadvertently weakens the device's structural integrity. When subjected to significant pressure, the frame lacks the rigidity to withstand bending forces, leading to fractures at the weakest points, particularly the hinges and joints.

Technical analysis: The boundary between aesthetics and durability

The biggest problem with the Galaxy Z TriFold lies in balancing aesthetics and mechanical durability. With a design featuring two hinges and three separate screen sections, the internal stress when the device is fully open is enormous. The use of plastic instead of reinforced alloys or next-generation ultra-thin glass (UTG) with better resistance has made the device more fragile than ever.

Technical experts believe that for a device with many moving parts like the Galaxy Z TriFold, any small error in material distribution could lead to disaster. In JerryRigEverything's test, the device's plastic screen was easily scratched and could not be restored under the effects of temperature and pressure, which are common occurrences in real-world use.

Challenges for future foldable smartphones

This failure serves as a wake-up call for Samsung and foldable smartphone manufacturers in general. As the race for thinness and the number of folds heats up, practical durability is often relegated to a secondary concern. For a device like the Galaxy Z TriFold to be widely commercialized and gain user trust, Samsung needs to find new material solutions—perhaps high-grade polymers or carbon fiber frames—to increase rigidity without significantly increasing the device's weight or thickness.

Currently, the Galaxy Z TriFold seems to be more of a technology showcase than a device capable of withstanding strong impacts or physical forces in daily life.
