The Kong movie premiere was abruptly cut short when a fire broke out backstage, engulfing the entire auditorium in flames.

On the evening of March 9th, the stage for the premiere of the blockbuster film Kong: Skull Island, held in the outdoor area of SC VivoCity shopping mall (Ho Chi Minh City), was destroyed by fire.

The organizers have issued an apology.

In a letter sent to media outlets, Ms. Luu Hanh, head of communications at CJ CGV Vietnam, stated that the fire originated from "some unforeseen technical reasons."

CJ CGV Vietnam affirmed that they quickly coordinated with the event organizers, building security forces, and local fire departments to handle the fire promptly, minimizing any unwanted losses.

The organizers confirmed that, according to feedback from the authorities, the accident did not cause any casualties. In the letter, the organizers also apologized to the audience for the incident.

In addition, CGV stated that it will coordinate with the event organizer and relevant authorities to further resolve the issue.

'Because of the fire dancers'

Following CJ CGV, the management unit of SC VivoCity shopping mall, where the event took place, shared with Zing.vn reporters the cause of the fire at the Kong: Skull Island movie premiere.

The building management also stated that the organizers and the fire department of District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, quickly coordinated to evacuate all attendees from the dangerous area. SC VivoCity confirmed that the fire started due to negligence by one of the fire dancers, who accidentally ignited a part of the stage. The flames then spread to the entire elaborate stage decoration.

"The fire was extinguished within 5 minutes and the area was secured, with no casualties. The fire only damaged the decorations at the event area. Attendees were reassured and guided to the theater to watch the film as originally planned," SC VivoCity stated in a press release.

Following the incident, workers quickly cleaned up the outdoor area. The shopping mall resumed normal operations.

Meanwhile, after the film's premiere ended, CGV General Director Dong Won Kwak thanked the guests and audience for staying to enjoy the blockbuster Kong: Skull Island. He said that "there's a silver lining" because no one was injured.

According to previous statements from the organizers, they invested over one billion VND to construct a stage dozens of meters high to recreate a scene from the film. The stage was built in 12 days by artisans who previously worked on the Nguyen Hue flower street (Ho Chi Minh City).

Besides being a blockbuster project, Kong: Skull Island was also entirely filmed in Quang Binh, Quang Ninh, and Ninh Binh provinces (Vietnam), which has garnered significant audience interest.

The film premiere was also attended by leaders from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Tourism, the Vietnam Film Department, and the US Embassy in Vietnam.
