Quarry collapse, 6 people died

At 10am on January 22, hundreds of blocks of rock fell on a group of workers sitting in a car and working at the foot of the mountain, killing 6 people and leaving one in critical condition.

At around 10am, dozens of workers from Tuan Hung Enterprise were working at a quarry in Yen Lam Commune (Yen Dinh, Thanh Hoa) when suddenly hundreds of large and small rocks rolled down from a height of nearly 100m halfway up the mountain.

Hearing the loud noise, the workers ran away in all directions. However, a group of nearly 10 people sitting watching the cars and working at the foot of the mountain were still buried. By 1 p.m., the rescue team had found and brought out 3 bodies. There were at least 5 workers inside and the chance of survival was not high.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Phi, Vice Chairman of Yen Lam Commune, said that the authorities are clearing the scene and searching for victims, but are facing difficulties due to the rocky terrain and slippery rain.

At 3 p.m., VnExpress reported, the scene was cordoned off. Ambulances and police vehicles were entering the site of the accident. Outside, more and more people and relatives of the victims from Lang Chanh and Dong Son districts (Thanh Hoa) were arriving. Screams and cries for their loved ones could be heard.

According to information from the People's Committee of Yen Dinh district, 6 people died, one person was taken to Hanoi for emergency treatment in critical condition. However, rescue forces have only been able to bring 4 people out, 2 people are trapped.

Excavators were called to the scene because of large boulders blocking the way. According to a member of the rescue team, the volume of rock that fell was huge, up to hundreds of cubic meters. As the rain became heavier, some medical staff and police were ordered to leave the scene to ensure safety.

Thanh Hoa Vice Chairman Ngo Anh Tuan arrived to direct the mobilization of the best forces and means to clear the scene and bring the victims out before dark.
