Landslide kills 5-year-old girl

At around 5:00 a.m. on August 13, in Na Vai village, Lang Ngam commune, Ngan Son district (Bac Kan province), a landslide occurred, burying the house of Mr. Doanh Thiem Phuong's family, causing the death of a baby girl named Ngo Thanh Tam, born in 2012.

Mr. Phuong suffered minor injuries, his wife, Ms. Do Thi Nga, was buried under rocks and soil, but was promptly rescued by people and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, where her health gradually recovered.

According to Phuong's neighbors, the landslide occurred around 5am. People were sleeping when they heard a loud noise. Then, they heard Phuong calling for help. Immediately, everyone ran over and found the house had completely collapsed, with rocks and soil burying the house.

People immediately dug up the soil and lifted trees to save people; Ms. Nga was rescued in time, however her daughter died after being crushed by a large mass of soil and rocks.

Ms. Chu Thi Huyen, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Ngan Son district confirmed the incident and said: "After receiving the information, the authorities immediately arrived to rescue people, evacuate belongings and people from dangerous places. At the same time, leaders of the People's Committee of the province, district, and all levels of the sector also visited and encouraged the victim's family."

Ms. Chu Thi Huyen added that due to heavy rain in Ngan Son district on the night of August 12 and early morning of August 13, the water level of rivers and streams rose, causing flooding and landslides in some places. Currently, the water has receded and the district is assessing the damage.

At the scene of the landslide, Mr. Doanh Thiem Phuong's house was located on the hillside, the landslide buried most of the house. Mr. Phuong said that the house was built a long time ago, the family leveled a corner of the hill to build the house.

On the morning of the landslide, the whole family was still sleeping in bed when suddenly the rocks and soil came crashing down. Luckily, Mr. Phuong was thrown out by the rocks and soil, while his wife and daughter were crushed by rocks and walls. His wife was rescued in time, but her daughter did not survive.

Previously, on August 4, also in Na Vai village, Lang Ngam commune, Ngan Son district (Bac Kan province), a landslide occurred, completely burying the stilt house of Mr. Long Van Giang's family. Fortunately, at the time of the landslide, no one was in the house, so there were no casualties.
