The days leading up toLunar New YearMany brackish water shrimp farmers in Nghe An province are harvesting and supplying fresh shrimp to the market. Due to increased demand, the price of commercial shrimp has risen significantly compared to other times of the year.

Mr. Nguyen Cuong's family in Hamlet 2, Dien Trung Commune (Dien Chau District) owns 6 hectares of ponds for raising shrimp and pigs. Due to investment...Shrimp farming using high technologyTherefore, it yields high production annually, especially the third shrimp farming season.

Mr. Cuong said that the demand for commercial shrimp is high every year during the Lunar New Year, so he invested in raising shrimp for the third crop on 3 hectares of ponds. He expected to sell about 10 tons of commercial shrimp during this Tet holiday, but by the 29th day of the lunar month, he had already sold 5 tons. The selling price during this pre-Tet period is quite high compared to the middle months of the year; shrimp of 20 pieces/kg are priced at 300,000 VND/kg, and shrimp of 50 pieces/kg are priced at 200,000 VND/kg.

"During Tet (Lunar New Year), traders order as many tons as we can harvest, but we can't sell it all. Therefore, the remaining shrimp in the ponds are waiting to be sold in January, when the price will be even higher. Because experience from previous years shows that shrimp prices increase after Tet due to scarce supply and strong market demand," Mr. Cuong said.

In some communes of Quynh Bang and Quynh Luong (Quynh Luu district); and Quynh Xuan ward (Hoang Mai town), some shrimp farming facilities applying technology are also harvesting their shrimp to sell during Tet.

Mr. Bui Xuan Truc, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Quynh Luu District, said: Quynh Luu has more than 500 hectares of shrimp ponds, but most are used for the main crop. Because the shrimp farming areas have not applied technology, it is difficult to succeed in the third crop, so the shrimp production at the end of the year is low, while the demand for fresh shrimp is high. Therefore, households that invest in applying technology will have higher incomes, because the selling price of shrimp during Tet (Lunar New Year) is much higher than usual.

Currently, in the province, there are 70 establishments applying advanced and high-tech shrimp farming models, suitable for multi-stage shrimp farming, covering an area of 121 hectares, increasing productivity and product quality.

Mr. Le Van Huong, Deputy Head of the Fisheries and Fisheries Inspection Department, stated that: Investing in high-tech shrimp farming, which is not dependent on weather conditions, allows for 5-6 harvests per year, with a yield of 15-20 tons/ha. Therefore, applying high technology to shrimp farming is essential to cope with climate change, environmental pollution, reduce input costs, and improve the quality of shrimp products.
