China's CSSA-1 'Aircraft Killer'

The CSSA-1 is a self-propelled version of the Type 90 35mm towed anti-aircraft artillery system designed and manufactured by Norinco Company (China).

The CSSA-1 is an advanced and very noteworthy self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system.

Built on the platform of the 35mm Type 90 anti-aircraft gun, the CSSA-1 has high combat performance, is extremely accurate and reliable when participating in destroying high-speed maneuvering targets, low-flying aircraft, helicopters, UAVs and cruise missiles.

The CSSA-1 provides point defense for ground forces as well as complements other air defense systems. Mounted on a 6x6 truck chassis, its reaction time to an air target is just 6 seconds, and the entire complex can be deployed or withdrawn within 90 seconds.

The CSSA-1 is equipped with an AF902A fire control radar, similar to Oerlikon's Skyguard I/II system, including a 3-parameter circular radar mounted on the roof of the control cabin, and a tracking radar mounted below the circular radar.

In addition, the gun carrier is also equipped with a day and night electro-optical sensor to operate in heavy interference or passive environments.

The fire control radar station is equipped with an auxiliary power unit (APU), with a continuous operating time of up to 12 hours. The surveillance radar has a detection and tracking range of up to 35 km when the target is an aircraft, or 15 km for cruise missiles, with a maximum detection altitude of 6 km.

The Type 90 35mm twin-barrel anti-aircraft gun operates by gas-operated recoil, so its rate of fire is very high, reaching 1,100 rounds/minute, with a muzzle velocity of 1,175 m/s, along with fast aiming speed, low recoil, and small dispersion, resulting in its effective range reaching 4,000 m.

The gun mount is electrically powered and manually operated for emergency use. The gun's azimuth is 360 degrees, elevation is from plus 92 degrees to minus 5 degrees.

This gun can fire four types of 35 x 228 mm ammunition: High Explosive Incendiary (HEI), High Explosive Incendiary-Tracer (HEI-T), Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive Incendiary-Tracer (SAPHEI-T) and Target Practice Tracer.

In addition, NORINCO also developed a type of fragmentation ammunition equipped with a programmable time fuze (PTFP), similar to the European AHEAD (Advanced Hit Efficiency And Destruction) ammunition.

PTFP projectiles are programmed to fire through coils located on the gun barrel. Each mother warhead contains more than 100 tungsten sub-projectiles with trajectory-stabilizing fins and explodes at a predetermined distance in front of the target, for maximum destruction.

The Type 90 can defeat most airborne threats as well as ground targets, including light armored vehicles.

Two ammunition containers are located on both sides of the turret. Each gun has 112 ready-to-fire rounds and 126 reserve rounds, with a reload time of only 7.5 seconds, thus ensuring the ability to destroy multiple targets as well as high durability.
