On July 29, Colombian officials announced that six workers had died and one had been rescued in an incident.gold mine collapsein the state of Antioquia in the central part of this South American country the day before.

Ms. María Moncada, Head of Administration of the Disaster Prevention, Response and Recovery System (DAPARD), said that so far rescue workers have found the bodies of four fatalities and seen two more bodies, adding that the cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Colombia has many small-scale underground gold and coal mines where tunnel collapses are frequent, as some mines are illegal and do not comply with necessary safety regulations.

The most serious accident occurred in 2010, when 73 people died in a coal mine collapse in northwestern Colombia – the world's fifth-largest exporter of this mineral.
