According to records, on July 21, 2011, the People's Committee of Nghe An province applied the measure of sending Nguyen Dinh Hanh to a reformatory school or educational institution for a period of 15 months for the act of theft.

On December 13, 2013, Hanh was again sent to a reformatory for 24 months. On December 24, 2015, Nguyen Dinh Hanh completed his sentence. After being released, he was lazy and unwilling to work, but wanted money to spend, so Nguyen Dinh Hanh continued to think of ways to steal property.

At approximately 12 PM on January 7, 2016, Hanh entered the headquarters of Hope Nghe An Special Economic Zone Animal Feed Company Limited (located in Nam Cam Industrial Park), went to the office of Mr. Huang Guo Sheng - the company's General Director, and stole a laptop.

When Hanh was carrying the computer out, he was discovered by company employees who shouted for help. Hanh took the computer into another room, placed it on a table, then climbed out the window and over the wall to escape. Afterwards, Nguyen Dinh Hanh went to the Nghi Loc District Police headquarters to surrender and confessed to his crime. Mr. Huang Guo Sheng's computer was valued at 4.5 million VND. Nguyen Dinh Hanh was prosecuted for theft of property.

At the trial, Nguyen Dinh Hanh sincerely confessed to his crime. Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel of judges sentenced Nguyen Dinh Hanh to 6 months imprisonment.
