There will be 3-4 cold spells during the Lunar New Year month.

During the upcoming Lunar New Year month (February 2016), there is a possibility of 3-4 cold fronts affecting the northern provinces.

These cold fronts may cause cold weather but it will not last long in the North; some areas may experience localized severe cold. Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang, Deputy Head of the Medium- and Long-Term Meteorological Forecasting Department (Central Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting Center), stated this at the workshop "Outstanding Meteorological and Hydrological Characteristics of 2015 and Forecast of Trends in 2016" recently held in Hai Phong.

Meanwhile, in the southern provinces, the weather is generally good, while the central region (Northern and Central Central Vietnam) may experience rain if cold air masses appear during the Tet holiday.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, in December 2015, there is a possibility of 4-5 cold fronts causing cold spells, showers, and thunderstorms in the northern provinces. The northern provinces are likely to experience 3-4 showers and thunderstorms, while the central provinces are likely to be affected by 2-4 periods of moderate to heavy rain. Cold spells will be more concentrated in the latter half of the month.

In the latter half of December 2015, the South China Sea region is likely to be affected by a typhoon or tropical depression.

During the recent cold spells, no new records for the lowest temperatures were recorded; however, the lowest temperatures were 1.6°C in Sa Pa (Lao Cai), -0.3°C in Sin Ho (Lai Chau), and 1.8°C in Dong Van.

The detailed forecast for the next 10 days for each region is as follows:

Northwestern Vietnam: From the 20th to the 22nd and on the 28th and 29th, cloudy with scattered rain. Light winds. Cold weather.

On the 23rd and 24th, the nights and mornings will be cloudy with scattered rain, while the afternoons will be sunny. Light winds. Cold nights and mornings.

From the 25th to the 27th, it will be cloudy with scattered rain. Light winds. Cold weather, with some areas experiencing severe cold.

Northeastern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa: On the 20th and 21st, cloudy with scattered rain. Northeast winds at level 2-3. Cold weather.

From the 22nd to the 24th, the nights and mornings will be cloudy with scattered rain, while the afternoons will be sunny. Winds will be easterly to southeasterly at level 2. The nights and mornings will be cold.

From the 25th to the 29th, it will be cloudy with scattered rain in the mountainous provinces on the 25th and 26th, followed by light rain in some areas. Northeast winds will be at level 2-3. It will be cold, with severe cold in the mountainous areas on the 26th and 27th.

Provinces from Nghe An to Thua Thien Hue: On the 20th, the northern areas will be mostly cloudy with scattered rain, while the southern areas will have scattered showers. North to east winds at level 2-3. Cold weather.

On the 21st and 22nd, it will be cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms, with moderate to heavy rain in some areas of the south on the 21st. North to east winds at level 2-3. Cold weather at night and in the morning in the north.

On the 23rd and 24th, the nights and mornings will be cloudy with scattered rain, while the afternoons will be sunny. Light winds. In the north, the nights and mornings will be cold.

From the 25th to the 29th, it will be cloudy with scattered rain on the 25th and 26th, followed by light rain in some areas. Northwesterly winds at level 2. Cold weather in the north.

Provinces from Da Nang to Binh Thuan: From the 20th to the 22nd, cloudy with rain, including moderate rain on the 20th and 21st, with some areas experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorms. Northeast to east winds, level 2-3.

From the 23rd to the 29th, the weather will be changeable with scattered rain in some areas, sunny days, and on the 26th and 27th, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northern part of the region. Light winds.

Central Highlands: From the 20th to the 22nd, cloudy to mostly cloudy, with scattered showers and thunderstorms, including moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in some areas in the south on the 21st. East wind at level 2-3.

From the 23rd to the 29th, the weather will be changeable, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas, and sunny days. Northeast winds will be at level 2-3.

Southern Vietnam: From the 20th to the 22nd, cloudy to mostly cloudy, with showers and scattered thunderstorms, including moderate to heavy rain in some areas on the 21st and 22nd. East wind at level 2-3.

From the 23rd to the 29th, the weather will be changeable, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas, and sunny days. Northeast winds will be at level 2-3.
