Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Lamborghini, has confirmed plans to put the highly anticipated Urus super SUV into commercial production in April of this year. Domenicali revealed this information in an interview with Digital Trends.

According to Domenicali, the first Lamborghini Urus models to go into production were only prototypes for testing and display. Meanwhile, the commercial versions of the Lamborghini Urus for customers have not yet been produced.

"The Lamborghini Urus production line will start in April of this year. Initially, the factory will only produce prototype Lamborghini Urus models. As you know, this is a completely new production line, so the first cars will only be prototypes. This is a very sensitive phase, and 2017 will be crucial for us. Don't underestimate the steps we are taking," Domenicali affirmed.

Furthermore, Domenicali stated that before the Urus vehicles are delivered to customers, Lamborghini needs time to train dealership staff on this all-new super SUV. Only when they fully understand it can dealership employees introduce the Lamborghini Urus to customers.

"People only remember the number 7,000, but they don't realize that we had to prepare the after-sales network and dealerships. Dealership staff need to have a thorough understanding of this model. The first Lamborghini Urus vehicles to roll off the production line will be used for training at dealerships," Domenicali added.

The figure of 7,000 mentioned by Mr. Domenicali is the production target that Lamborghini aims to achieve in 2018. According to Lamborghini, they will achieve this number thanks to the success of the Urus.

The Lamborghini Urus is expected to hit the market in 2018 with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine. Later, Lamborghini will add a hybrid powertrain to the Urus, making it Lamborghini's first commercially available hybrid vehicle.
