Lamborghini Urus super SUV to start production next April

The first Lamborghini Urus SUVs to roll off the production line will be used for staff training at dealerships.

Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed plans to put the much-anticipated Urus SUV into production in April. Domenicali revealed the news in an interview with Digital Trends.

According to Domenicali, the first Lamborghini Urus to go into production are only prototypes for testing and display. Meanwhile, the commercial Lamborghini Urus for customers has not yet been produced.

"The Lamborghini Urus production line will start in April this year. Initially, the factory will only produce Lamborghini Urus prototypes. As you know, this is a completely new production line, so the first cars are just prototypes. This is a very sensitive phase and 2017 will play an important role for us. Do not underestimate the steps we are taking," Domenicali affirmed.

Furthermore, Mr. Domenicali also said that before the Urus is delivered to customers, Lamborghini needs time to instruct dealership staff about this completely new super SUV model. Only when they understand it clearly, can dealership staff introduce the Lamborghini Urus to customers.

"People only remember the number 7,000 without knowing that we have to prepare the after-sales and dealer network. Dealer staff need to understand the model well. The first Lamborghini Urus cars will be used for training at the dealer," added Mr. Domenicali.

The 7,000 figure that Mr. Domenicali mentioned above is the target production that Lamborghini wants to achieve in 2018. According to Lamborghini, they will achieve this number thanks to the success of the Urus.

The Lamborghini Urus is expected to hit the market in 2018 with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine. Lamborghini will later add a hybrid drivetrain to the Urus. This will make the Urus Lamborghini's first commercial hybrid vehicle.
