Farmers weep over a bumper tomato crop...
(Baonghean.vn) - After the Lunar New Year, many households in Quynh Luu district suffered losses due to a bumper tomato crop. Traders bought only a small amount at low prices, forcing farmers to feed their crops to livestock or even throw them away.
According to Mr. Tran An Khang, Director of Big C Vinh Supermarket, immediately after reading the news from Nghe An Online Newspaper, he and some Big C staff went to the tomato-growing areas in Quynh Luu and found the situation exactly as reported. From there, the supermarket decided to step in to "rescue" the tomatoes and help the farmers. In the first trip, the supermarket bought 2.5 tons, and on March 12th, they will purchase another 11 tons to be transported to supermarkets in the system in Hue, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Hanoi, etc.

According to Mr. Khang, "Big C is responsible for sending quality control officers, covering sample analysis costs, sending teams to participate in harvesting with the farmers, and bearing all transportation and business expenses. The purchase price at the field, as proposed by the farmers, is 2,000 VND/kg plus 500 VND for the farmers' transportation costs to the collection point for packing and loading onto the supermarket's trucks."

To purchase all of these tomatoes, Mr. Khang said Big C will transport them to supermarket chains nationwide to help the people.
Currently, this unit is focusing on purchasing in Quynh Thanh commune (Quynh Luu district) and has the potential to expand purchasing to other localities if support is needed.
