Simeone extends contract with Atletico Madrid
The Madrid team has successfully convinced the Argentine coach to stay with the club for at least two more years.
Cadena SER reported on July 25 that Diego Simeone's new contract with Atletico had been signed. Simeone will stay with the Madrid club for at least two seasons, instead of just one season under his old contract.

Keeping Simone for another year is Atletico Madrid's biggest win this summer. |
Simeone's future has been one of the biggest concerns for Atletico in recent times. Initially, the contract between the two sides was valid until 2020, but the 47-year-old coach later asked to shorten the term to 2018, with a higher salary than before. This move is believed to be to clear the way for Simeone to leave, with PSG or his former team - Inter Milan - being two possible destinations.
However, that concern has been resolved smoothly by Atletico with a new contract, although it is still unclear whether Simeone will stay until 2019 or 2020. According to Cadena Ser, the agreement was only reached after Atletico satisfied Simeone's wishes about signing a short-term contract.
Antoine Griezmann's commitment to stay, along with Koke, Jan Oblak and Saul Niguez, and the signing of Vitolo from Sevilla, have all convinced Simeone to commit to another two years. And in return, Atletico are working hard to sign another target the Argentine coach wants, Diego Costa. However, due to the transfer ban, the players arriving this summer will only be available to play for Atletico from January 2018.
Simeone won the La Liga and Copa del Rey double with Atletico as a player. He returned to the club in January 2012 to succeed Gregorio Manzano. In Simeone's first half-season, Atletico won the Europa League. The team then added a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Super Cup, a European Super Cup, and reached the Champions League final twice.
Along with stable results, Atletico under Simeone also achieved a good financial foundation, thanks to regularly participating and going deep in the Champions League. From next season, they promise to earn more money when moving to the new Wanda Metropolitan stadium.
