Shocking news: Former V-League foreign player arrested for fraud after obtaining Vietnamese citizenship.

A former Cameroonian footballer who once played in the V-League has been arrested by Can Tho police for fraud and misappropriation of property. Nguyen Hang Tcheuko Minh was arrested along with two African men, Monthe De Fouda Paul Martial (29 years old, Cameroon) and Ifeanyi Matthew Anthony (28 years old, Nigeria).

According to the investigating agency, in late 2016, a Nigerian man named Papa (residing in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City) invited Anthony and Tchueko Minh to plan a scam to defraud people of their property.

This group's tactic is to befriend Vietnamese women through social media, promise to send them gifts, and then use various excuses to steal their money.

In total, Minh and the other suspects defrauded a woman from Can Tho of over one billion VND. The Can Tho City Police Investigation Agency is currently taking statements to bring this case to court.

Nguyen Hang Tcheuko Minh, whose real name is Benoit Tcheuko, was born in 1983 in Cameroon. After joining the V-League, this central midfielder played for Kien Giang, Dong Thap, and Dong Nai.

Despite lacking professional skills, Benoit Tcheuko was "better a weak ox than a strong cow," and, coupled with his marriage to a Vietnamese woman and relatively good Vietnamese language skills, he was granted Vietnamese citizenship by Kien Giang to play in the V-League 2013 from round 8 onwards, taking his wife's surname. Tcheuko's wife acted as an intermediary, facilitating the move for striker Oseni Bolaji, who was playing for Hanoi FC, to play football in Vietnam.

This 1.70m tall midfielder previously played in Vietnam for Saigon Stone Art (2007) and Can Tho Lottery (2010-2011), before beginning his top-level career by joining Kien Giang FC in 2012.

Here, Tchueko Minh went through difficult times because the team from the West owed him a considerable amount of money. When Kien Giang disbanded, Tchueko Minh also lost money unfairly. Tchueko Minh used to be a football agent after retiring from playing in Dong Nai. However, this career was hampered by bad luck, and the players Tchueko Minh brought in were not appreciated by the clubs.

The fact that he colluded with his African friends to scam women came as quite a surprise to many who had interacted with Tchueko Minh. A former coach of Tchueko Minh said: "Before, when he joined my team, he was quite gentle. After competitions, he usually spent time with his family."

He earned a pretty good amount of money because naturalized foreign players have an advantage; the club pays him a salary not much lower than that of regular foreign players, at least 50 million VND per month. However, after he left the team, I haven't been in contact with him, and I don't know how he's doing. Life is full of surprises."
