(Baonghean.vn) - The Department of Education and Training has issued a document requesting the Que Phong District Department of Education and Training to coordinate the handling of the incident at Hanh Dich Primary and Secondary School.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Department of Education and Training: Immediately after the incident occurred, the Department requested the Que Phong District Department of Education and Training to report on the situation and sent relevant officials to work at the school to inspect, review, and coordinate the handling of the matter.
In addition, a document was promptly issued requesting the Department to continue proactively coordinating with relevant specialized departments of the district to quickly find the main cause of the acute kidney failure in 20 students while they were studying and living at the school, so that appropriate adjustments could be made.

After receiving the official letter from the Department of Education and Training and the District Education Office, the Principal of Hanh Dich Primary and Secondary School and the local authorities organized visits to families of students who had fallen ill or died; carried out effective communication to stabilize the teaching and learning situation at Hanh Dich School in particular and in the area in general; and coordinated with the health sector to effectively carry out sanitation and disease prevention work, especially in schools with boarding and semi-boarding students.
Previously, according to a report from the People's Committee of Que Phong District, on January 1, 2017, the Hanh Dich Commune Health Station received two patients with symptoms of edema, decreased urination, and dark urine. These patients were Lo Van Thanh, a 9th grade student, and Lo Anh Tuan, a 6th grade student, both from Ban Cong and attending Hanh Dich Primary and Secondary School.
Two days later, Dr. Lo Van Nghia and nurse Lu Thi Y conducted a screening at Hanh Dich Primary and Secondary School and discovered six more cases with similar symptoms.
By January 20, 2017, the number of cases at the school had reached 20 people with similar symptoms. Initially, 11 patients were examined and treated at Que Phong District Hospital, of which 8 were discharged, and 3 were transferred to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Subsequently, 2 patients died: Lo Van Tuan and Lo Van Hieu. These were two brothers living in the same house in Cham Put village, Hanh Dich commune.
According to the education department's report, all 20 patients attended Hanh Dich Primary and Secondary School, with 15/20 patients eating lunch at the school; 5/20 patients ate at home (02 primary school students attended two different school locations).
Following the incident, inspection teams from the Provincial Preventive Medicine Center and the District General Hospital also took blood samples from 10 patients who were receiving treatment at home. These patients have since stabilized and returned to school.
The cause is currently undetermined, but initial possibilities include: acute glomerulonephritis suspected to be caused by streptococcus bacteria, or poisoning of unknown origin.
