Song Lam Nghe An: Finding a way to win

Two consecutive victories against The Cong Viettel and Hong Linh Ha Tinh not only brought in 6 valuable points, but also showed that Song Lam Nghe An is gradually shaping its identity, approach to matches, and the character to win convincingly.

The positive aspects

After a turbulent first half of the season, Song Lam Nghe An is showing positive signs. Their explosive 4-1 victory at Hang Day Stadium against The Cong Viettel demonstrated their sharp counter-attacking ability, while their narrow 1-0 win away at Hong Linh Ha Tinh showcased pragmatism, composure, and discipline. These two contrasting approaches share a common goal: SLNA has learned how to win regardless of the opponent's strength.

The first noticeable point is the fighting spirit. Under coach Van Sy Son, SLNA is no longer a fragile team dependent on momentary inspiration. Instead, it's a team that takes to the field with clear determination, playing with a passionate heart but a cool head. The players are brimming with desire in every tackle, yet still maintain composure to avoid unnecessary mistakes.

This was clearly demonstrated in the Nghe An derby. SLNA started proactively, creating a fast-paced and aggressive game from the beginning. After scoring a goal thanks to a moment of brilliance from Michael Olaha, the Nghe An team didn't get carried away by emotion but knew when to retreat, organizing a multi-layered defense and preserving their lead. It wasn't a victory based on luck, but the result of a sensible approach to the game.

Secondly, there's the principle of "knowing oneself and knowing the opponent." After their resounding victory against The Cong Viettel, SLNA didn't enter the derby with complacency. Ha Tinh might not be considered as strong as Viettel in terms of squad, but they are still a formidable opponent. Coach Van Sy Son instructed his players to respect their opponent and strictly adhere to the tactical plan. This humility helped SLNA avoid complacency and maintain balance in every decision.

From a professional standpoint, SLNA's playing rhythm has also improved. In the match against Viettel, they exploded at the right moment. And against Ha Tinh, the yellow-shirted team created an early advantage before clearly switching to a defensive counter-attacking style. This flexibility shows that the coaching staff has made reasonable calculations and is not imposing a rigid playing style.

It's impossible to overlook the individual role. Michael Olaha continues to be the driving force. His goal against Ha Tinh is proof of his ability to operate independently, coordinate, and finish at a high level. But Olaha's value lies not only in the goal. He appears in key areas, drops back to support the defense, and stretches the opposing defense to create space for his teammates. When the captain operates smoothly, the whole ship sails in the right direction.

More importantly, two consecutive wins have helped SLNA temporarily move away from the relegation zone. Their current 8th place position isn't exceptionally high, but it's enough for the team from Nghe An to look ahead to the rest of the season with a different mindset – more confidence and a more proactive approach.

Needs further improvement

However, the victory doesn't completely mask areas that need adjustment. The derby against Ha Tinh showed that SLNA's defensive system still has worrying gaps.

When opponents combine through the middle with quick one-two passes, center-backs and defensive midfielders are sometimes slow to read the situation and intercept the ball. Viktor Le's breakaway and one-on-one with Cao Van Binh, or Albertine's shot for Ha Tinh, are clear warnings. If the opponent had been sharper, the outcome could have been different.

Their ability to defend against aerial balls and control the area in front of the penalty box is also not yet truly stable. SLNA defends well as a team, but when constantly under pressure, their concentration sometimes wanes. Against stronger opponents with more diverse and accurate finishing abilities, these weaknesses will be thoroughly exploited.

Furthermore, while their counter-attacks were sharp, they lacked the ruthlessness to seal the game. Even leading 1-0, SLNA had quick transitions but lacked the precise finishing touch. If they had capitalized better, they could have avoided the pressure of the final minutes.

However, the positive aspect is that these limitations are manageable. Once the mental foundation is established and the tactical intentions become clearer, refining the details is only a matter of time and perseverance.

Two consecutive wins don't make SLNA a team that can even think about the championship race, but they confirm one important thing: winning with a sensible and composed approach. If they continue to keep their feet on the ground, maintain discipline, and improve their defensive system, the team from Nghe An can certainly aim for a less difficult season than in recent years.

Most importantly, SLNA is gradually regaining its former glory with a fiery spirit, discipline, and a refusal to surrender to difficulties. Once they know how to win, the road ahead will become brighter.
