(Baonghean.vn) - For many years, the Thai River has played a crucial role in draining floodwaters for many communes in Quynh Luu district. However, the encroachment and illegal construction of embankments by residents for aquaculture in the middle of the river could obstruct the flow during the flood season.

Mr. Tran Binh Trong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Hung commune, acknowledged that for a long time, nearly 20 households in hamlets 7 and 12 have encroached on the Thai River to raise fish, obstructing the flow. The commune has propagated and encouraged residents not to build embankments for fish farming along the river, but many households still do not comply. Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hang, Head of the Agriculture Department of Quynh Luu District, said: Every year, during the rainy season, Quynh Luu District often experiences flooding due to the encroachment and siltation of the Thai River. In response to this situation, the district is conducting a review and coordinating with the communes of Quynh Hung, Quynh Tho, Quynh Hong, etc., to raise awareness and encourage people to dismantle structures and restore the land. It is expected that by the end of 2023, the district will implement a project to dredge the silted Thai River, worth 8 billion VND, to improve flood drainage for these communes.
