"Star Wars 7" is about to break "Avatar's" record for highest-grossing film in history

Revenue from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is still increasing rapidly, possibly taking the title of the highest-grossing film of all time from “Avatar”.

Next week, the film will be released in China – the world’s second-largest film market. If it is well received by Chinese audiences, the film promises to break “Avatar’s” record of $2.8 billion.

While “Star Wars 7” is dominating the box office, a few films are still bringing in fans and making a decent profit. The comedy “Daddy’s Home” remains No. 2 in North America after two weeks in theaters. Over the weekend, “Daddy’s Home” earned $29 million, bringing its domestic total to $93.7 million. The film marks the reunion of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg since 2010’s “The Other Guys” in the story of a mild-mannered radio executive who strives to be the best stepfather to his wife’s two children.

Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" ranked third with $16.2 million. Fourth was "Sisters" starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, earning $12.6 million. The remaining positions in the Top 10 highest-grossing films in North America were "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip" ($11.8 million), "Joy" ($10.4 million), "The Big Short" ($9 million), "Concussion" ($8 million), "Point Break" ($6.85 million), "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" ($4.6 million).
