A report by QPTV channel has indicated a high probability that Vietnam has acquired the extremely modern RVV-AE air-to-air missiles manufactured by Russia.
| Recently, in the documentary "Steel Shield Protecting the Southern Airspace of the Fatherland" by Vietnam National Defense Television (QPTV) about the training and combat readiness activities of the 370th Air Force Division, the RVV-AE air-to-air missile made its official appearance for the first time. |
| Besides RVV-AE, the news report also features images of R-27 air-to-air missiles, Kh-29 air-to-ground missiles, and Kh-31 supersonic anti-ship missiles. These are the weapons systems of the Su-30MK2 multirole fighters of the heroic 935th Regiment, 370th Division. |
| RVV-AE is the export designation for the highly advanced R-77 active radar-guided medium-range air-to-air missile developed by Vympel and deployed by the Russian Air Force since 1994. To this day, the R-77, or RVV-AE, remains one of the world's top air-to-air missiles, comparable in power to the American AIM-120 AMRAAM. |
| The RVV-AE air-to-air missile is capable of engaging a wide range of targets, from fighter jets, helicopters, and transport aircraft to cruise missiles, in all weather conditions, day or night, on land or at sea. |
| With RVV-AE, the capabilities of the Su-30MK2 fighter jet and the four Su-30MK aircraft (purchased in 2004) are elevated to a new level in air superiority missions or in defending airspace against airborne threats. |
| One of the outstanding advantages of the RVV-AE missile is its "fire and forget" capability. Specifically, after leaving the launch platform on the aircraft, the missile flies by inertia in the initial phase, and in the middle phase, it flies based on target parameters updated from the aircraft's radar. In the final phase, the active radar on the missile (activated approximately 20km from the target) automatically detects, searches for, and locks onto the target. |
| Furthermore, another advantage of the RVV-AE missile is its unique aerodynamic design, which reduces its radar cross-section to avoid early detection by enemy aircraft, increases flight speed and overload tolerance, and allows for faster maneuvering (up to 150°/second), making escape impossible for the enemy. |
| At the same time, thanks to the application of new materials and improved aerodynamic design, the size and weight of the RVV-AE missile have been significantly reduced (175 kg and 3.6 m long) compared to the R-27 medium-range missile family (approximately 250-350 kg and nearly 5 m long, depending on the variant) which had been developed much earlier. |
| The RVV-AE is equipped with a solid-fuel rocket engine, giving it a maximum range of up to 80km and a target engagement altitude of 5-25km. |
| The RVV-AE air-to-air missile is equipped with a 22.5 kg fragmentation warhead with a proximity laser fuse. |
| The RVV-AE and Su-30MK2 are the "deadly duo" of the modern Vietnam People's Air Force. |
