A Russian military source said that the combat capabilities of the Su-35 fighter jet have been significantly improved after upgrades and combat testing in Syria, Sputnik reported on September 23.

According to ktelevision channelThanks to being equipped with new electronic warfare systems, such as the N035 Irbis-E passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar, the upgraded Su-35 fighter jet is capable of tracking 30 targets at a distance of 400 km, while simultaneously engaging and destroying 8 targets at once.

Zvezda argues that the biggest advantage of the Su-35 is its ability to counter Western fifth-generation fighters while being significantly cheaper than these aircraft.

Su-35s dropped bombs to destroy ISIS in Syria in August 2017.

The Su-35 is a 4++ generation fighter jet designed and manufactured by Sukhoi Corporation, possessing exceptional maneuverability thanks to its Saturn AL-41F1S thrust vector control engines. The aircraft is painted with radar-reflectoring materials and equipped with many modern electronic devices.

This is the most modern fighter jet that Russia has deployed to Syria to participate in the campaign against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) militants. During its participation in airstrikes in Syria,Some Su-35S fighter jets have ingested sand and gravel on the runway at Hmeymim base, causing damage to their engines. The protective mesh around the air intake is not strong enough to stop such large foreign objects, forcing Russia to implement modifications.

Some technical issues in the Su-35's signaling and display systems during this operation have also been resolved in the upgrade.
