Using the DEXXUMT machine helps detect osteoporosis.
(Baonghean) - Vinh Transport Hospital is one of the medical units that always proactively applies scientific technology, modern equipment, and implements new techniques to serve the examination and treatment of patients. In October 2016, the hospital continued to invest in renovating its examination rooms and introducing a new device: an advanced bone density scanner (DEXXUMT - South Korea). This type of machine provides accurate and reliable results, serving as the gold standard for assessing a patient's bone density.
Due to the need to promptly provide medical examination and treatment services for patients, the Internal Medicine Department of Vinh Transport Hospital has established two clinics, Internal Medicine 3 and Internal Medicine 4. Dr. Vu Dinh Ba, Head of the Internal Medicine Department, stated: “Internal Medicine Clinic 3 handles examination and treatment of cardiovascular, respiratory, and general internal medicine conditions. Internal Medicine Clinic 4 examines and treats musculoskeletal diseases.”
In line with the policy of investing in modern medical equipment to meet the needs of patient examination and treatment, the Transport and Communications Hospital has recently invested in renovating its examination rooms and installing a DEXXUMT X-ray bone densitometer from South Korea. To maximize the effectiveness of this new equipment, the hospital sent staff and doctors from Internal Medicine Department 4 to participate in a certification training course at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, thereby meeting the needs of medical examination and treatment for the people.

The Vinh Transport and Communications Hospital is responsible for examining, treating, and rehabilitating officials, employees, and workers in the transport and communications sector, as well as other individuals in the region from Nghe An to Quang Binh.
In particular, since the implementation of health insurance coverage, the hospital has had many elderly patients, and these are at high risk for osteoporosis (all women over 50 and men over 70 are at high risk of osteoporosis; however, in reality, in Vietnam, many women suffer from osteoporosis at the age of 40-45 and men at the age of 50-60). Therefore, Vinh Transport Hospital quickly put the DEXXUMT X-ray bone density scanner into operation from the beginning of October 2016.

Thanks to the introduction of the DEXXUMT X-ray bone densitometer, the internal medicine department has not only improved its capacity and quality of medical examination and treatment for the public, but has also actively collaborated and supported other clinical departments in the examination and treatment of diseases.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Huyen, Head of the Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation Department, said: "Because many patients treated at the department have bone and joint-related conditions, after the Internal Medicine department put the bone density scanner into operation, we have ordered patients to have their bone density checked, which has provided very timely support for the department's treatment work."
The DEXXUMT X-ray bone density scanner, known for its advanced technology, provides accurate and reliable results, making it the gold standard for assessing bone density in patients at the most reasonable investment cost. With this machine, when patients undergo bone density testing at Vinh Transport Hospital, the scanner will examine two locations: the lumbar spine and the femoral neck.
Ms. Chu Thi Diu (71 years old), residing in Block 1, Quan Bau Ward, Vinh City, said: “I had leg pain for 17 days, making it very difficult to walk. When I went for a check-up at the Transport and Communications Hospital, the doctor ordered a bone density test. This was my first time having a bone density test. After the scan, I only had to wait 7 minutes for the results, and thanks to that, I found out I had severe osteoporosis.”
Ms. Dau Thi Hang (46 years old) from Vinh Xuan hamlet, Dong Vinh ward, Vinh City, said: "Luckily, I was able to get checked for osteoporosis at the hospital, and I'm very happy because I didn't have to wait long for the results. Moreover, the equipment is new and modern, so I feel very reassured."

Not only the elderly are at risk of osteoporosis, but also those who are bedridden for extended periods for various reasons, patients with chronic kidney disease, those with hyperparathyroidism or hypogonadism, those on long-term corticosteroid use, and those with joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis are also at risk of osteoporosis.
People who are addicted to alcohol, beer, tobacco, or coffee, who are physically inactive, spend little time outdoors, or have diets low in calcium and protein are also at higher risk of developing osteoporosis. Similarly, those who are underweight, suffered from rickets or malnutrition in childhood, and those with a family history of osteoporosis (grandparents, parents, etc.) are also at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than others.

Dr. Nguyen Kien Son, Head of the Osteoporosis Measurement Department at Vinh Transport Hospital, said: “If osteoporosis is not checked, detected, and treated promptly, it will seriously affect people's health. Therefore, immediately after Vinh Transport Hospital put the DEXXUMT X-ray osteoporosis measurement machine into operation, many patients came for check-ups. After more than 15 days of operation, in Internal Medicine Room 4, osteoporosis measurements have been performed on more than 70 patients, including 15 inpatients and the rest outpatients.”
Mr. Nguyen Phuc Manh Toan, a nursing officer in Internal Medicine Department 4, said: “When checking with the DEXXUMT X-ray bone density scanner, the machine provides specific results about the patient's condition, such as: severe osteoporosis, osteoporosis and osteopenia, or normal. Importantly, the machine automatically updates and warns patients about their condition based on these results. Therefore, it greatly assists in treatment. All patients who have had their bone density checked at Internal Medicine Department 4 are very satisfied with the service and feel reassured because the measurement results are very accurate.”
