1. Armed attack at a nightclub in Türkiye leaves 39 dead

On January 1, an attack occurred at the Reina nightclub in the Ortakoy district of Istanbul (Türkiye), killing 39 people.
The gunmen were dressed as Santa Claus and spoke Arabic, carrying assault rifles. One witness said he saw four bodies lying on the ground. Some witnesses also said there was an explosion. The death toll could rise, as there were between 700 and 800 people at the club at the time of the armed attack, according to Mynet Haber.
2. Serious train accident in New York leaves more than 100 people injured

The incident occurred at a busy train station in downtown Brooklyn, New York City during rush hour on the morning of January 4 (local time), injuring more than 100 people, but fortunately no one died.
Reuters quoted the New York Fire Department as saying that the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train was traveling from Queens to downtown New York when the incident occurred at Atlantic Station. There were about 600-700 passengers on board at the time of the accident.
Speaking at a brief press conference later, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the train was traveling slowly and derailed after hitting an obstruction at the station. The collision caused severe damage to two of the train's six cars.

On January 3, the Constitutional Court of South Korea held its first public hearing to consider the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye over the scandal involving her and her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil. 4.Violent riot at Brazilian prison, 60 people died

A 17-hour riot in a prison in northwestern Brazil left at least 60 people dead on January 2.
According to Reuters, the riot occurred at Anisio Jobim prison in Manaus city, Amazonas state, Brazil late on January 1 and was controlled at around 7 am yesterday, January 2 (local time). The incident left at least 60 people dead and 184 prisoners took advantage of the chaos to escape. However, by yesterday afternoon, 40 prisoners were recaptured.
5. The US admits to "unintentionally" killing 188 Syrian and Iraqi civilians

After numerous accusations of civilian casualties in the fight against IS in Syria and Iraq since 2014, the US-led coalition has for the first time admitted to “unintentionally” killing at least 188 civilians.
In a statement released on January 2, 2017, the Combined Joint Task Force-Iraq Operations (CJTF-OIR) said: “According to statistics, the force has unfortunately killed at least 188 civilians in airstrikes since the beginning of the counter-ISIS campaign. CJTF-OIR regrets the loss of civilians in the fight against ISIL in Iraq and Syria.
We also extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and those affected by these airstrikes. Every effort has been made to minimize civilian casualties, but in some incidents, loss of life is inevitable.”
6. Iraq: Bombing in the capital, 90 casualties

On January 2, a car bomb by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group killed 24 people in the Sadr City district of Baghdad, Iraq.
Reuters news agency quoted an online statement posted by the pro-IS Amaq news agency as saying that IS targeted Shi'ite Muslims, whom IS considers apostates. In addition to the 24 dead, 67 others were injured in the blast.
