When many traditional melodies become outdated, and performance styles and spaces are no longer powerful enough to move generations, then opera will fulfill its mission. This mission is to reflect reality through an artistic lens; to convey artistic values through innovative performance spaces; and to resolve existential conflicts through the language of folk songs and chants.
It's impossible to remember how many times the Nghe Tinh folk drama "The Words of the People, the Words of the Nation," written by Vu Hai, has been performed, or how many familiar and unfamiliar faces have shed tears as they immersed themselves in the drama's atmosphere. The success stems not only from the script and the consistently brilliant performances of the actors, but also from the skillful use of folk songs in the dialogues, the characters' narratives, and throughout the story about our beloved President Ho Chi Minh.
