Microsoft has officially updated its line of compact laptops with the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 8. The biggest highlight of this generation is the inclusion of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. However, the starting price of $1,599 is generating mixed opinions when compared to other ARM-based competitors on the market.
Snapdragon X2 Plus performance: Stable but not a breakthrough compared to the Elite version.
The standard version of the Surface Laptop 8 uses a Snapdragon X2 Plus chip (X2P-64-100), along with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage. In practice, testing shows that the difference in CPU and GPU performance between the Plus version and the Elite version (X2E-78-100) is not significant. This makes paying an extra $100 to upgrade to the Elite version of the Surface Pro less convincing for the average user.
For enterprise customers, Microsoft also offers Intel Panther Lake processor options, including the Core Ultra X series chips with the more powerful Arc B390 iGPU. However, the ARM-based version remains the focus due to its optimized thermal performance and impressive battery life for everyday office tasks.

The Surface Laptop 8 maintains its strength with a 3:2 aspect ratio IPS touchscreen display, highly regarded for text-based and spreadsheet-related tasks. The 120Hz refresh rate provides a smooth swiping and transition experience. A major plus is that the screen is flicker-free (PWM flickering), offering better eye protection during extended use.
However, when compared to competitors using OLED technology, the Surface Laptop 8's screen is somewhat inferior in terms of contrast and black depth. On the other hand, the brightness and color reproduction of this IPS panel are still among the best in the premium office laptop segment.
Competitive pressure from Asus Zenbook A14
The biggest hurdle for the Surface Laptop 8 is its price. For $1,349, users can get the Asus Zenbook A14, which features a more powerful Snapdragon X2 Elite chip (X2E-88-100), boasting six additional CPU cores and superior Adreno X2-90 graphics.
