They were not only neighbors but also close relatives. However, a simple joke about installing a security camera escalated the conflict, resulting in one person suffering 47% disability and the other paying the price with over 8 years in prison.
Escaped from the hospital to seek revenge.
Tran Duc Huy (born in 1974) and Mr. Tran Duc T. (born in 1959), residents of Quynh Phu commune, have lived next door to each other for many years. Their family ties meant the two families often visited each other, occasionally sharing drinks during gatherings.
On the morning of April 30, 2025, upon seeing Mr. T.'s family installing a camera, Huy taunted them, saying, "You don't have money, yet you're trying to install a camera." Feeling mocked, Mr. T. became angry, went inside, grabbed a knife, and threw it at Huy, but missed. Frightened, Huy ran away, but Mr. T. chased after him. During the struggle, Huy sustained a knife wound to his abdomen and was hospitalized for treatment.
It seemed like the matter would end there, but Huy's days in the hospital only fueled his resentment. Injured and requiring treatment, yet the person who inflicted the injuries neither visited him nor offered any financial assistance for his treatment, Huy felt insulted and disrespected.
On the evening of May 3rd, after several days of treatment, Huy left the hospital on his own accord to go home and retrieve his personal belongings. In a state of distress, the defendant conceived the idea of revenge. That same evening, Huy brought a knife to Mr. T's house. Finding the door locked, Huy climbed over the wall, went to the bedroom, and repeatedly stabbed the victim in vital areas such as the chest, head, abdomen, and legs.
It was only when Huy's wife discovered what was happening and rushed to intervene that the dangerous act stopped. Mr. T. was taken to the hospital in time, and his body injury rate was determined to be 47%. After committing the crime, realizing the wrongfulness of his actions, Huy surrendered to the police.
The price of lack of self-restraint.
At the trial presided over by the Nghe An Provincial People's Court, Tran Duc Huy was prosecuted for two crimes: "Murder" and"Illegal use of military weapons"Before the court, the defendant admitted to all the charges, stating that he acted impulsively due to extreme frustration and a lack of self-control.
The court determined that the defendant's actions were exceptionally dangerous, directly infringing upon the lives of others. The use of a knife to attack vital areas demonstrated a subjective disregard for the law. Without timely medical intervention, the consequences could have been fatal. Therefore, the prosecution for "Murder" was justified.
Regarding the knife used in the case, authorities determined it to be a highly lethal weapon, considered a military weapon according to regulations, therefore the defendant must bear additional criminal responsibility for the illegal use of a military weapon.
However, the court also considered mitigating circumstances such as honest confession, remorse, surrendering after committing the crime, influencing the family to compensate the victim with 10 million VND, and the victim submitting a petition for leniency.
At the end of the trial, the panel of judges sentenced Tran Duc Huy to 7 years and 6 months in prison for "Murder" and 1 year in prison for "Illegal use of military weapons," for a combined sentence of 8 years and 6 months.
The trial concluded in a somber atmosphere. Just one ill-considered remark, coupled with a moment of uncontrolled anger, shattered neighborly relations, leaving one person injured and another to pay the price with years behind bars.
Conflict is inevitable in life. But if everyone knew how to control their ego and chose dialogue instead of violence, then such unfortunate incidents wouldn't happen. The law is always strict, and the price of a lack of self-control is sometimes too high.
