A woman nearly lost 60 million VND due to a suspicious phone call, but the Vinh Hung Ward Police intervened in time to prevent the loss.
The Vinh Hung Ward Police in Nghe An Province recently thwarted a phone scam targeting elderly people, helping residents avoid being defrauded of large sums of money and raising awareness of high-tech criminal tactics.
On the morning of December 25, 2025, Ms. NTH (born in 1963, residing in Block 6, Vinh Hung Ward) received a call from someone claiming to be a telecommunications employee. This person informed her that her phone number and citizen identification card were being used by fraudsters to carry out scams, and requested her to provide personal information and transfer 60 million VND as a "deposit" to facilitate the process of working with the police to prove she was "not involved in the case."

Despite being advised and warned by relatives that this was a dangerous situation...fraudulent tacticsHowever, due to fear and anxiety, Mrs. H. still tried to borrow money from her neighbors to comply with the demands of the perpetrators.
Immediately after receiving the information, the Commander of Vinh Hung Ward Police directed officers to quickly arrive at Ms. H.'s house to verify and clarify the incident. There, the police officers comforted Ms. H., helped her calm down, and clearly explained the tactics used by those impersonating authorities to defraud and steal property.
Through the discussion, Ms. H understood the true nature of the situation and promptly stopped the money transfer, avoiding financial loss.
Following this incident, the Vinh Hung Ward Police recommend that citizens be more vigilant against scams via phone and social media. Police, prosecutors' offices, and courts do not conduct business over the phone, do not request personal information or OTP codes, and do not ask for money transfers for "verification," "deposit," or "proof of innocence."
When receiving suspicious calls, people should remain calm, not comply with the caller's requests, promptly discuss the matter with family members, and contact the nearest police station for guidance and assistance. At the same time, they should proactively educate and remind family members, especially the elderly, to prevent and deter fraudulent activities and property theft.
